Kipahulu was prized by the Hawaiian ali'i for its fertile 'aina and kai. Thousands of people once lived a sustainable lifestyle in this area farming, fishing, and surviving with the resources of the ‘ahupua’a, from the mountain to the sea. Kipahulu Ohana revives, restores, and shares the practices of traditional Native Hawaiian culture. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating on the "ways of old" through cultural demonstrations and hands-on activities. Using the wisdom and spiritual guidance of our kupuna, we seek to re-establish a Hawaiian lifestyle in Kipahulu. By initiating sustainable projects, dividing the labor, and sharing the results we preserve our culture. Our Hana 21st Century Community Learning Center programs include Kapahu Living Farm, a traditional wetland taro farm operated in partnership with Haleakala National Park, and shoreline management projects as part of our Malama i ke Kai program including an opihi “rest area” or sanctuary.
